I remember starting out learning to dance contra at the Horace Mann School at Ball & LaPalma. I was just learning guitar at the time. Betty would encourage me to play and sing my songs. I was so nervous, I would always ask her to sing with me and she would. Then when Cynthia Smith started a group to try to have a music/dulcimer festival, Betty caught wind of it and I know she dragged Carolyn to the meeting to see what was going on with this new group. Betty infused the group with her love and philosophy of music. She helped to make sure everyone was on track. This led to the formation of the Folk Music Society of OC, which forms the current board of the Living Tradition. She had everything to do with the success we have today. She taught me the importance of being involved in the community. Of course, if it weren't for her we wouldn't be at Anaheim Downtown Community Center. I remember too the times she was with a cane or in a wheelchair. She never let that stop her. I remember many times wheelchair dancing with her. I also remember how she would tell me exactly how she felt. She expressed her disapproval as well as approval of how TLT was getting on. On a musical note, Betty has never failed to tell me that she did not like a particular song and of course she loves all kinds of music. There is not enough space for all my memories, but I will love and remember her always. And she had such a great impact on my life that I shall always cherish. George Santori
